Implementing Strategies for Resiliency in Hampton Roads

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The Hampton Roads region is vulnerable to sea level rise, flooding and storm inundation. To begin addressing these issues the region has undertaken a number of initiatives to support resiliency in the region. One the major initiatives is the Rockefeller Foundations 100 Resilient Cities which Norfolk was named in 2013. This program has provided the City with grant money as well as helping to establish a Chief Resiliency Officer.

This session will include presentations by Christine Morris, Norfolk’s Chief Resiliency Officer, and Paul Moyer, Director of Planning for VHB and ULI panelist, and Kaye Methany, Principal with HR&A and supporting HUD and Rockefeller’s National Disaster Resiliency Competition capacity building initiative.

The panel will describe approaches to resiliency based on their work in other areas of the US as well as the work that the City of Norfolk is currently pursuing. The session will also include site level concepts that were developed as part of a ULI panel that was held in December 2014 that focused on the Ft Norfolk Area. The goal of the session will be to provide an understanding of the challenges and strategies Norfolk is pursuing and provide ideas that could apply to other communities across Virginia.
