Design Matters: Comprehensive Planning for Meaningful Growth Management and Placemaking

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Can a comprehensive plan do more than just recite statistics and draw conceptual maps of future development? Plans are moving away from being documents full of impenetrable facts and figures to more visually appealing and user friendly presentations of a community’s vision for itself. This session will discuss how updating a plan to be more accessible can also be an opportunity to introduce new visual design guidance that supports the concept that design matters and should start with a community's policy document. The city of Suffolk's latest plan update serves an example of holding the line on growth boundaries while introducing Place Types that will guide development patterns in all areas of a diverse community that spans areas from urban to rural. Concepts to be covered include planning for community resiliency through good design that promotes increased transportation and infrastructure efficiency, economic synergy, true housing options, and preservation of real rural production and the natural environment. Participants will learn how integrating design into a comprehensive plan can help achieve these goals.
