Virginia’s post-Federal economy: how the Commonwealth can compete in the global marketplace

Virginia has the most Federally dependent economy among all 50 states. While this reliance on the Federal government has historically insulated the Commonwealth from economic upheaval, the recent trend of Federal reductions has done great damage to Virginia’s economy. With political winds in Washington pointing towards continued austerity, Virginia will be challenged to build a private economy that overcomes the economic losses caused by ongoing Federal cutbacks.

National research shows that economic growth in the U.S. will be led by global commerce and will largely occur in metropolitan areas. A 2013 study by the Brookings Institution entitled The 10 Traits of Globally Fluent Metro Areas concluded that metro areas that are best positioned for growth are those with strong identities, a culture of innovation, access to people and capital from around the world, and, most of all, coordinated regional leadership from both the public and private sectors. At present, each of Virginia’s metro areas falls short of meeting these ideals. This session will examine where the Commonwealth’s major metros stand in terms of their global competitiveness and what public and private leaders must do to help build a stronger economy in the coming years.
