RiskMAP and Resilience in Coastal Communities

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Under FEMA’s Risk Map Program, an identification and assessment of coastal flooding risks has led to updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Studies (FISs) for more than 30 Virginia coastal counties and cities. These coastal communities are also receiving innovative non-regulatory Flood Risk Products to help better identify risk, take action to reduce it and increase their resiliency. Because no two communities are alike; FEMA recognizes that the road to resilience may not look the same for each community. Strategies to promote reduced flood risk and increase resilience will involve not just the regulatory and non-regulatory products, but opportunities for training and bringing new and old partners to the table for this important discussion. In this presentation we will explore existing barriers and incentives for communities to take action. Your successful resilience strategy could be enhanced by a broad range of federal, state and local partners who are all actively interested in helping to improve hazard mapping, flood risk, mitigation planning, and communication.

Resilience should be a goal for all communities, not just those touched by RiskMAP. This is an opportunity for planners to play a critical role in helping your community identify and adopt resilient strategies.
