NIMBYism, "Not In My Back Yard", is a pervasive challenge for many affordable housing and community development projects. This session includes an overview of essential elements of NIMBYism and will provide participants with tools for overcoming opposition to affordable housing and building support for projects. Topics discussed will include:
  • Understanding the root causes of NIMBY
  • Using data to make your case
  • Building trust and communicating effectively
  • Finding supporters and using them strategically
  • Case studies from success stories
Participants will be provided with a valuable workbook outlining a comprehensive approach toward overcoming opposition to affordable housing including sources and worksheets for jump-starting a defensible strategy to counter NIMBYism in their communities. This introductory workshop is an ideal starting point for planning professionals facing the challenges of building stakeholder consensus for comprehensive land use and affordable housing plans, plans of development, and community visioning processes. This workshop sponsored by Housing Virginia
