This session will discuss food planning in the Commonwealth of Virginia and look specifically at efforts in the City of Roanoke to use the USDA Food Access Research Atlas to study food access issues. Using information from the Atlas as well as data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Roanoke Valley – Alleghany Regional Commission, and local organizations, a food access assessment for the City of Roanoke was conducted 2014/2015 that created a series of maps, tables, and figures to explore issues of geographic, informational, economic, and social barriers to access to fresh, healthy and nutritious food. Discussion of this methodology can inform future assessment methods in other communities in Virginia impacted by food insecurity. Many working in food planning are unaware of the food access data available from the USDA and its versatility. Contrasting this information with infrastructure and demographic data paints a more complete picture of the barriers to food access and areas for planned improvements.
