NG911: What is it? When is it coming? And what Planners need to know.

Since 2003, public safety professionals have been planning and preparing for the migration to NG9-1-1 technology. This migration is necessary in order to support the functionality of cell phone technology. Current 9-1-1 technology allows for only a small amount of data to be transmitted with the phone call, and does not support the “location” capability of your cell phone.

One of the fundamental changes that NG9-1-1 brings to localities is a change in the source of local address data. In the current 9-1-1 environment, the local telephone company provides this information. In the new NG9-1-1 environment, this address information, and additional critical datasets, will be provided by local GIS data. For the first time, additional local government functions (addressing, GIS data maintenance, cross department coordination) will be in the critical path of emergency response. This informational presentation provides an overview of NG9-1-1, current initiatives underway in Virginia and the critical components of NG9-1-1 that planners need to know.
